The inauguration of Doctors of the World central office on Plaza Saint-Hubert took place in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere on May 25th. Located at 6235 St-Hubert Street, a crowd of partners and community stakeholders gathered to celebrate their arrival.

Through a space that reflects Doctors of the World's mission of providing healthcare to the most vulnerable, their homebase is a true haven where the patients can be listened to, supported, and received with kindness. "Sometimes, it's the first smile they get," noted SPVM Director Fady Dagher during his visit.

Present in Canada and 73 other countries, the organization has been working for over 30 years to make healthcare accessible to everyone, regardless of their circumstances. In Montreal, the team provides support to individuals without health insurance cards, people experiencing homelessness, and many people who use community services that require mental health support. Through its mobile clinic, Doctors of the World also reaches out directly to people in various neighborhoods throughout the city. “Access to healthcare is not a privilege, it is a fundamental human right,” emphasized Dr. Philippe Sauthier, gynecologist, oncologist, and vice-president of the board of directors of Doctors of the World Canada.

During the evening, the various speeches highlighted the importance of solidarity and collaboration among people. Several prominent figures were present to mark this significant moment, including representatives from the City of Montreal, the public health community, and partners who contributed to the project.

In fact, we had the opportunity to speak directly with the executive director of Doctors of the World, Ms. Nadja Pollaert, who has held the position since 2014. For them and their team, which is 99% female, the choice of setting up on Plaza St-Hubert was a natural one.

“Plaza St-Hubert is a true commercial hub in the heart of Montreal, renowned for its dynamism, energy, and diversity,” the team explains. “It’s also an environment conducive to collaboration between local businesses and community organizations.”

Several businesses in the area have already won the hearts of the staff, including Chez Nestor, Double Menton & Saucisson, Plaza Juarez and Librairie Raffin.

The arrival of Doctors of the World on the Plaza is further proof of the neighbourhood's rich human and cultural diversity. Between independent businesses, citizen initiatives, and committed organizations, the Plaza continues to evolve and diversify as a true community hub.
